Volunteer Advocates make a difference in the lives of people living in long term care facilities one visit at a time. Every year, the Ombudsman Volunteer Program honors an individual who has demonstrated remarkable service to elders in long term care settings with the Louise Abrahams Yaffe Award.

Carrie Russert began volunteering with the Board on Aging and Long Term Care as a Volunteer Advocate in 2019, serving at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. A veteran herself, Carrie brings a unique and personable perspective to her role, allowing her to connect meaningfully with the members she serves. With more than 50 years of experience working in long-term care, first beginning as an aide and advancing her career to nursing home administrator, Carrie knows firsthand the impact a listening ear can make.
Carrie's empathy, calm demeanor, and deep commitment to members have made her an invaluable presence at the Veterans Home. She played an integral role during member transition from an older hall to a newly built hall, helping address member concerns and ensuring their voices were heard during a time of significant change, while remaining a source of stability. Through her consistent weekly visits, attendance of member council meetings, and strong collaboration with staff, Carrie has built trusting and meaningful relationships. Whether listening to veterans share their stories or respecting those who choose not to, Carrie approaches every interaction with compassion and empathy. Reflecting on her work, Carrie emphasizes the importance of connection, offering simple but powerful advice: “Always listen."
The Board on Aging and Long Term Care is proud to name Carrie Russert as the 2026 Louise Abrahams Yaffe Volunteer Advocate Award recipient for her outstanding dedication, compassion, and lifelong commitment to serving those in long-term care. Congratulations, Carrie!
